Johnny Mullenax is a dynamic 27-year-old musician from Tulsa, Oklahoma, whose deep-rooted passion for music began at the tender age of five. Growing up in a musically inclined family, his early exposure to performance came when his mother, Janey, a member of a 50’s rock-and-roll cover band, put him on stage to play the Star-Spangled Banner. This early experience ignited his love for the guitar and set him on a path of musical exploration. Throughout his teenage years, Johnny immersed himself in various musical environments, including notable festivals like the Walnut Valley Festival and Flat-Picking Championship in Winfield, Kansas, showcasing his adaptability and dedication to his craft.

During his time at an arts magnet high school in Tulsa, Johnny connected with fellow young musicians, forming a jazz band that became a local favorite, performing at a BBQ joint every Friday night. His diverse musical journey continued as he became part of a live hip hop band at the age of 18, sneaking into clubs with a borrowed ID. Influenced by a wide range of artists from AC/DC and The Ramones to John Coltrane and Parliament, Johnny's musical style evolved into a unique blend that he describes as "a funky country bluegrass good time for working folks," reminiscent of Billy Strings' eclectic approach.

Johnny’s professional career took a significant turn before the COVID-19 pandemic when he toured with fellow Oklahoman TJ McFarland (Tennessee Jet), connecting with a network of touring musicians. After years of being a sideman, he launched his own project, which led to the creation of the Sunday Bluegrass Brunch residency at Tulsa’s Mercury Lounge in January 2021. This event quickly became a hub for musicians and fans, featuring an array of talented artists and a collaborative spirit that embodies Johnny’s philosophy of inclusivity and musical excellence. Regularly joined by esteemed musicians like flatpicking champion Thomas Trapp and Jason Boland & The Stragglers' drummer Jake Lynn, Johnny’s performances are a testament to his lifelong dedication to studying and sharing music. Whether on stage or in the audience, Johnny ensures that everyone is welcome to join the celebration, promising a vibrant and unforgettable musical experience.
